Paint correction fixes most swirl marks and light scratches, but not deep ones. It’s a machine polishing process that levels the top layer of your clear coat to erase surface flaws.
By removing a thin amount of clear coat, it clears away the damage that sits inside the paint, not just on it. That’s why it handles swirls, haze, and oxidation so well. But scratches that catch your fingernail reach past the clear coat into the base paint. Polishing can’t rebuild what’s gone, so those need touch-up or repair instead.

When A Wash And Wax Beats Full Correction

This Bronco came from a driveway off Van Dyke and 26 Mile, and it is the case we see most in Shelby Township. Newer vehicle, garage kept, owner keeps up with washes. There was not enough in the clear coat to justify correcting it. A hand wash and a layer of wax protected paint that was already in good shape, and the light dust scratches came out with a clay bar and a polish.
A lot of Shelby paint looks worse than it is. Running M-53 south every morning throws road film and stone dust at the front end, and that sits on top of the finish rather than in it. It washes off. Swirls from a tunnel wash do not, and those are two different jobs with two different prices.
The other honest answer is timing. If someone brings us a daily that has seen a few winters but they are trading it in by spring, correcting it rarely adds up. A solid wash, wax and a pass on the headlights makes the right impression for a fraction of the cost.

Road Salt And Its Effect On Michigan Clear Coats
Macomb County roads get hit hard from November through March. The county and MDOT use rock salt and magnesium chloride brine to manage winter. That stuff doesn’t just sit on the pavement, it coats every panel, clings to wheel wells, and eats into your finish.
Salt is corrosive. That’s chemistry, not opinion, and the EPA notes road salt causes billions in corrosion damage to vehicles each year. And it doesn’t need to reach bare metal to cause problems, it attacks your clear coat first. Tiny chips from gravel on Gratiot Avenue or Hall Road let salt get underneath, breaking down the bond between clear coat and base paint. You’ll see white spots, rough patches, or dull areas that won’t wash off.
You can see it every winter. A two-year-old truck comes in looking five years older, gritty even after a wash, with a hazy film across the hood that soap can’t lift.
Paint correction removes that damaged layer, cutting back the compromised clear coat to reveal clean paint. Wait too long and the salt works deeper, leaving less to save. That’s why spring, right after salt season, is the best time.

How Correction Pricing Works
There’s no flat rate. Any provider who quotes a number without seeing the vehicle is guessing.
What drives the cost up or down:
- Number of correction stages (single, two, or three-stage)
- Vehicle size and body panel count
- Paint hardness, which varies by manufacturer
- Whether prior bodywork changed the clear coat thickness
We always take a paint depth reading first. That’s non-negotiable, since it tells us how much clear coat we have to work with and prevents a burn-through no polish can fix.
Before booking anyone, ask if they measure paint thickness and explain what stage your car needs. We’d rather be straight about what your paint actually needs than oversell a service that won’t help.

Frequently Asked Questions
There is no flat rate. A single-stage polish on a small sedan and a three-stage correction on a full-size truck are different jobs with different hours behind them. We look at the panel count, the paint hardness and the depth reading, then quote the actual work. Anyone giving you a number without seeing the car is guessing.
If the paint is dull, swirled or hazed and the car is one you plan to keep, yes. Correction is the only thing that actually removes the defect instead of filling it. If you are trading the car in within a few months, a wash and wax usually makes more financial sense, and we will tell you that.
The correction itself is permanent: that clear coat has been levelled. What wears is the protection on top of it. A wax gives you a couple of months, a sealant six or so, and a ceramic coating years. Wash technique matters more than anything: clean tools, no automatic brushes.
You can, but the risk is burn-through. Clear coat is measured in microns and once you polish past it, no amount of additional polishing brings it back. It becomes a repaint. Without a paint depth gauge you are working blind, which is why we read depth on every panel before the machine comes out.
Four. Wash and measure the paint under proper lighting; decontaminate with a clay bar to pull bonded salt, film and grit out; machine polish in single or multiple stages to level swirls, oxidation and etching; then protect with a wax, sealant or coating so the corrected finish holds.
Look at the paint in direct sun. If you see fine spiderweb swirls, a hazy film soap will not lift, or dull patches that do not shine back, that is correction work.
